How to make black and white then add color - Paint.net

I do this where I have a picture and I want to convert it to a black and white picture, then color one part of it.

1. copy image and paste as a new layer

2. select top layer and select > Adjustments >Black and White.

you now have a black and white image on the top, with the same image in color under it.

3. select the eraser tool, making sure your only erasing the top image (black and white) and not the bottom image (the color one)

4. erase some part of the black and white and the color will show through.

this is very easy to do.

here is a quick example:

the original picture

and then when I finished the above steps

I think it works best with old pictures that have color, and with pictures like flowers where you expect to see a lot of color.

a variation on this is to select a different picture that has different colors and then let them show through.

for example a black and white seascape for the top, then get a color picture of the ocean and put it behind your black and white.

You can also do crazy stuff like put someone's face inside a cut orange.

This is one of those effects that with the right picture can really make it jump out at you,
and it's very easy to do.
The flower example probably took me less than a minute to do.

If you have a nice picture of someones face you can do the eyes in color.

I had some examples of using a different photo behind but I can't find any of them now, but it's a pretty cool effect with the right photo.
