VGA Video Capture
VGA Video Capture
I make these stop motion videos of things dancing to the music. I use my old XP machine to render the stop motion because I have the right software on that machine. Problem is, when I do a screen capture of the video, it's more than my machine can handle, so the quality is kinda low. What I'm thinking about is something I can plug the VGA output into that will let me capture the movement in better quality. Also, because it's an XP machine it refuses to export several gig files, because it won't recognize the SD card when the files are too large.
The machine I want to capture to runs Windows 7
I know a lot of people want to capture their game play to make videos, but most seem to be HDMI out and my old clunker doesn't do HDMI. Any suggestions would be great!

Re: VGA Video Capture
I used to use a Winfast card when I wanted to use the output of an old Camcorder connected direct to my computer. That was RCA connection (yellow). I think it cost me 30 or 40 bucks. Unfortunately my Winfast card became unsupported when Windows 7 came along and it's at the very bottom of my junk box at this point.

I just took a look for something similar that supported VGA in and it is pricier than I thought. If you want to put a vga to dvi adapter in there (for about 5 bucks) then you can find dvi supporting capture cards for just under a hundred bucks. That is a pretty big investment for supporting hardware that you may be looking to replace after next week's lotto (/bingo).

Re: VGA Video Capture
I think these video editing programs are suppose to run with older hardware:

Re: VGA Video Capture
I was not aware of these adaptors. I just bought this one as a Win 7 laptop does not have. I will see how it performs and will comment.

Re: VGA Video Capture
So, I got this amazing encoder thing. I realized I had a HDMI out, so I got this thing and it's amazing because it can record straight to SD card. You just press the big record button on the top. It also has RCA inputs and so I could use it to capture VCR stuff and it saves them in BlueRay format. I'm loving it.

Re: VGA Video Capture
First I did buy that DP...Display Port adaptor ..$13 Amazon Can. as my ( this laptop...used... just purchased for $212 w/Win 7)) did not have HDMI. Works like a charm. I have never seen or was aware of such a DP on a laptop. I don't have a desktop.
Did you buy the Startech? It is quite expensive.

Re: VGA Video Capture
That looks pretty cool, can you play off it too? or does it just capture?
Re: VGA Video Capture
I haven't tried playing off it, but I found the latency with things like that too much for music. I have great bluetooth headphones and a really good transmitter, but even with those, the latency is enough to make playing challenging. I think for music, wired is the way to go.
Re: VGA Video Capture
Speaking of latency and bluetooth ...wireless ...that is a problem that I encounter along with video players etc.
Re: VGA Video Capture
If you are watching a movie on VLC you can press J or K - and that offsets the audio up or down. Just do one or the other to get it in sync
Re: VGA Video Capture
Intresting. I generally don't use VLC much any more. Pot player is my go to player. Also d/l more h265 (HEVC)
Re: VGA Video Capture
Most players have a hot key for adjusting the audio and video snyc. I usually use MPC-HC but for my play along videos I use VLC because I use it on an older machine and MPC-HC has problems with repeat.
Re: VGA Video Capture
I am aware but I have always found it 'tricky' to get a sync somewhat quickly. Perhaps I am not doing it right. I previously used to use KMP which has a lot of controls but it did not cover HEVC.
I have not had a sync problem for quite some time.
We are so fortunate we have good stuff coming out of the wazoo..
