my dad bought a bunch of the S$P spiders when they were really cheap in 2003 I think he got in just over 80 and he has been holding them ever since.
not exactly sure, but I think he got the ones that were on AMEX: symbol SPY
I just looked and it looks like they are around 135 now, so that has worked out for him.

I don't want to talk about it! OK well if you insist....
Every employee at work gets 500 "stock options" purchased for them for each of thier first 4 years when they get hired. After you've been there a year your first 500 options come due. From that point on you can "cash out" any time you like for the difference between what your options were purchased for and what they are at at the moment...
In the beginning of Feb my options were worth $2500.00... I don't know how rich you people are, but that's a ton of money to me... by the time March 1 rolled around, the "morgage crisis" had hit in the states and options plumitted to the point where I would have had to pay money to exercise them...
So I figure "no big rush" we've got a radio spectrum auction coming up in June, if the company buys up a bunch of spectrum to set up a cell phone service that will push stocks up by at least a couple of bucks... shows what I know... we're bidding like crazy, winning lots of blocks so far, but stocks are plumiting again... apparently investors are concerned that developing that spectrum is going to take hundreds of millions of dollars that would otherwise go into dividends... greedy b--terds...
Anyway... I guess I'll just forget what they used to be worth... and stop paying attention all together I guess..

I have been doing some scale trading,
that's where you buy stocks or futures and then as they drop you just keep buying more. then with any luck they go back up and you make some money.
so far it's kind of been working... a little.

I have the occasional dabble on a few things but I only seriously invest in gold and medical supplies, they both fluctuate from time to time but they always bounce back, most times they soar. The secret is to always take out your initial cost/outlay and put it in a bank, and then play the market to your heart’s content, that way you never loose.
I made a killing when I was in my late teens on a no name "two bit" Australian mining company called "Poseidon" - (nickel). Stocks jumped from $8.00 to $130 a share within 3 months, and I'm still smiling.

Sure is nice when ya hit a x's bagger. I have not yet.
I have made some dumb moves and some ok moves.
In this game I would rather be lucky than smart....because the market is ALWAYS smarter.
...today (so far) Canada is on a tear...the US down.
Canada has done many things right.
There is a ton of cash/prosperity out there......and huge demand.

I don't know the guy in the article you linked to, but my take on news in general has been that it's not very helpful for predicting stock prices.
I have been following the news relating to commodities because I thought it might be more relevant than news on stocks.
but they seem to be about the same, lots of people predict something, it seldom happens, then they come up with some lame reason why the market went the other way.
recently I went through some magazines that were about a year old,
I then looked up all the prices that were predicted... so far I can't even find someone who is 60% accurate.
the other problem is people like Jim Cramer, I think he is probably pretty smart and knows a lot about the stock market,
but the problem is that he has a prediction on just about everything out there. I think he makes hundreds of predictions a day, and it's not fair to pick out a few of them and say they did or didn't work.
