New PhpBB Board

Post by Dude » Fri Mar 16, 2018 5:47 pm

this is the new software, I over the last several days I have been able to convert the database from SMF to phpBB,
I thought that was the hard part but I have been working for 15 hours trying to update phpBB to the new version and I have made no progress.

With any luck I should be able to get the new version running, and then I will be able to start working on a shoutbox and some other things.

But it looks like the 5 minute delay that SMF had is gone, so it should now look like everything is working again.

Does it feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders now that the simple machines forum is gone.. Good idea trying it out, but "GOOD REDDENS" to that one (IMHO)

THANKS! (for all the work BTW)

I am working on upgrading to the latest version of phpBB,
a chat box can not be installed until after the upgrade is complete.
hopefully it will not take much longer.

I had high hopes for that one, I had used SMF before on new forums starting with no posts and it worked fine.
but I guess once the post count hits some level it needs a lot of modifications to just make it work at all.

I just noticed that your posts are moderated and I have to approve them all, I need to figure out how to turn that off.

and when I get the upgrade to the new version done it will be compatible with cell phones and tablets which is kind of cool,
and everything should be back to normal.

Not sure if I am just getting old or what?
but it seems everything is just getting more complicated and more difficult.
I am trying to restore a backup of the site, but to do that I need to change a couple lines in the backup
so I need a editor that can edit text, sounds simple enough,

but the backup file for this site is just over 100 megs, and all the text editors I have choke when they try to load the file,

So I turn to google and search - Linux text editor for large file.
and I find dozens of responses like this:
- don't edit the file just view the file with xxx
- there is a program that works really good but it only works on Windows and it only works with files that are 64 megs or smaller.
- I have never used this program before but a friend of a friend said that Vi would work on files if they were not too big, and you have to hit control C a few times in the middle when it is reading in your file, another friend said he tried it and it corrupted his whole file so it might not work.

Once again I find myself spending hours on something that seems like it should be simple and only take a few minutes.

Definitely getting old. There is a point there where it goes from "nothing is ever easy" to "everything is stupid hard".. I used to hope for the best and plan for the worst but now I just go ahead and get started on the worst because there isn't a hope in hell it will turn out to be the best.

What has happened to Webby? Did you fire him and replace with AI? ;D

How do you center align here?

He is still around,
maybe he broke some of his fingers and can't type so much right now?
I think it takes 6 weeks to heal broken fingers.

Centering does not work like it did before, and I am working on installing the newest version of phpBB,
it is not going smooth but I am still hopeful I will have it soon.
and centering may be different with the new version.

I lost count of the number of hours I have been working on this upgrade,
so I have officially given up and decided to hire someone to do it,
I am too old to be up at 3am working on this upgrade that does not want to cooperate.

Now I am working on trying to hire a php programmer to run the upgrade and fix the problems,
and I am finding it's not easy to get someone who knows how to do it that will work for a reasonable price.

Having trouble getting anyone to even respond to work on the database,
didn't know it would be this much trouble to find someone,
but I will keep trying until I get someone to contact me back.

Yes the new board is set up to run on cell phones, tablets, or desktop computers.
that is one of the features that should come in very handy.
